The War of Western Europe Against Israel

The War of Western Europe Against Israel
by Joseph Carmi and Arie Carmi
Both Europe and the United States have large and active Moslem communities devoted to their compatriots in the Middle East. Both, too, have visible Jewish communities. Yet according to the Anti-Defamation League, there has been no increase at all in anti-Jewish incidents during the past two years in the US, while in Europe such incidents are sharply on the rise.
This book takes a close look at the disturbing upswing in anti-Semitic violence in Europe by investigating European attitudes towards the State of Israel since its inception; by paying close attention to statements made by leading politicians and opinion-makers; and by following trends in European media.(160 Pages)

Everybody Has Somebody In Heaven

Everybody Has Somebody In Heaven
Essential Jewish Tales of the Spirit
For science fiction lovers - especially those who have followed the career of Avram Davidson - this is a special treat. Everybody Has Somebody In Heaven is a posthumous collection of the award-winning science-fiction writer's complete Jewish works. It includes some of his most famous short stories, such as "The Golem, " and many of his short nonfiction pieces which shed light on the vicissitudes of his own life, as well as the lives of the people he describes. In addition to Davidson's work, there are biographical sketches about the author by science fiction editor Jack Dann and several other writers and editors who knew him well. This will probably become a collector's item for sci-fi fans.
Leslie Cohen, The Jerusalem Post May 10, 2002
Nonpareil Fantasist Avram Davidson left our world - a world he magnified and enhanced with glimmering tales constructed according to his peculiar slant of intelligence and vision - in 1993. But since then, he's been well served by a host of loyal friends determined to keep his work alive. First came The Avram Davidson Treasury (1998), followed the same year by The Boss in the Wall, and shortly afterward by The Investigations of Avram Davidson (1999). Now we have the current book, subtitled Essential Jewish Tales of the Spirit, and edited by Jack Dann and Grania Davis. (And soon to come is another collection, The Other Nineteenth Century.) Not a bad legacy, and better than many other authors fare after their deaths.
The volume under discussion today is divided into several sections. First comes Davidson's early works: sketches, poems, and short stories printed from 1947 to the start of Davidson's fully professional career. Serving as a break at midpoint is a small symposium wherein fellow writers reminisce about Davidson. Next up: a selection of Davidson's mature work. Finally, to close: some previously unpublished gems found among Davidson's effects after his death.
Each item is perceptively introduced by one of the editors, or in the other cased by Davidson's son Ethan or by his literary custodian, Henry Wessells. These fact-filled paragraphs set everything firmly in historical and literary context. Additionally a biographical essay by Eileen Gunn rounds out the book.
Because Davidson's religion was so essential to his art, having a chance to read his apprentice work centering on Judaic topics is invaluable, offering insights into all his later work. These stories by a young man just finding his stride are themselves well crafted and entertaining, albeit not of the magnitude of later work, although the brief parable "The Fisherman … A Tashlich Legend" packs a certain punch. But the fully formed stories are just glorious. "The Golem, " "Goslin Day, " "Dr. Morris Goldpepper Returns, " and "The Crown Jewels of Jerusalem" all exhibit the unique Davidson blend of erudition, goofiness, and pathos. And the brand-new finds tease with dreams of what might have been had Davidson lived longer.
Taken as a whole, this book is a crucial piece of Davidson monument still abuilding.

I Have Someone In Heaven And So Do You!
Do you ever get that tingly feeling between your shoulder blades? You know, the one that makes you feel like someone's watching you? Well guess what. Someone IS watching you. But it's not anyone here on Earth. According to the title of this book, it's someone up in heaven. Well, this doesn't have anything to do with the book except the title, but I thought it might give you a laugh.
Now read about the book and enjoy! In this collection of stories and poems written by Avram Davidson, you'll find laughter and tears, happiness and sadness within pages of one another. I found laughter even in the introductions! This book will give you something that you can pick up in whatever mood you're in.
Let's take for an example, the first story in this book, "The Golem". In the Table of Contents, written under "The Golem" is "Avram's Favorite Story". Now, I have to say, from what I've heard on golems before now, I was expecting something with a magician, lightning, fire, something scary. You know what I'm talking about of course. Well, that's not what I got at all! I got something that make me think of my visits to my Russian friends' homes, listening to their parents as we conversed in Hebrew and broken English. I laughed so hard at this story, my mom looked over at me with one of those "have-you-gone-mad?" looks. So I read her a paragraph and she started laughing too!
But now, you must be asking yourself, "Didn't she say she cried at parts too?" And the answer to that is "Yes" I did say that. And I DID cry. When I read the story "Dan Cohen" I cried, but I laughed too.
Avram Davidson's Everybody Has Somebody in Heaven is an incredible collection that is lots of fun to read, and something to pick up when you're in between books and just want something to page through. Or, if you're like some of my friends, you might pick it up and read straight through. As I look at the book in front of me now, I have to smile to myself, remembering things I've read in it, but I'm not going to tell you everything because then it'll ruin the book for you!
Suffice it to say, I enjoyed this book immensely, not just the short stories, or the introductions, but also the poetry that is so beautifully written. Even the cover is magnificently drawn with bright, fun colors, easy on the eye and something light for the heart when everything around you is going crazy. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did and keep it on your bookshelf along with all your other favorites and not hidden in the back with the books you don't plan on reading again! I give Avram Davidson's Everybody Has Somebody in Heaven four stars, but you might rate it differently. The only way to know is by reading the book! Have fun!

From Publishers Weekly
Billed as "the first practical, comprehensive guide that integrates research, professional marriage counseling techniques and Jewish wisdom, " this book uses ancient Jewish teachings about marriage as a starting point for finding--and keeping--a mate. Aiken, a psychologist who lives in Jerusalem, opens the book with yenta-like tips on "who to be and what to look for" when searching for one's "b'shert" (intended). She then offers advice on all the details of planning a wedding, even giving suggestions on how to keep kosher in an exotic honeymoon location. But Aiken's sensible and businesslike advice does not come to an end under the marriage canopy; she is deeply concerned about divorce statistics, so the second half of the book discusses marital communication, problem-solving and the two potentially explosive issues of money and sex. Her brief chapter on how children change a marriage seems almost like an afterthought, but in all, this is a sweeping guide that lives up to its own promises. Compiled and arranged by Chaim Rockman, None Of Them Were Heroes: Letters Between The Lines 1938-1942 is an anthology of letters written by a family dispersed over three continents who tried to maintain contact with one another during the dark days of World War II. Arranged with selected newspaper articles from Europe and the United States that combine to put the terrible events of the spread of Nazism in context, None Of Them Were Heroes shows a very personal and unforgettable viewpoint of ordinary individuals struggling to survive and endure during those perilous times.

B"H
Once in a while, a really great book comes along, the kind of book that makes you want to run out into the street, stop people at random, and demand they drop whatever they are doing and read this book, right now. 'None of Them Were Heroes" is one of those rare books.
Author Chaim Rockman argues that his book is not a Holocaust story, and he is literally correct: this is not a story of the camps, or of 'ordinary Germans', nor does it focus on Hitler or his willing executioners. Instead, Rockman takes a very different approach: he tells the story of a family - his own - most of whom had escaped from Germany in the early and mid-1930's. They were out of Germany, and free to varying extents, but they had left their elderly mother, Lina, behind, planning to bring her out as soon as they were settled.
And therein lies the problem: the opportunities for leaving Germany for any Jew - let alone a poor, elderly woman with no specialized skills - were rapidly reduced to almost zero as the Nazi noose tightened across Europe. The letters that form the basis of the story are commentaries on what each of them did - and didn't do -to free the trapped Lina.
'Heroes' is a book of faction - based on real people and actual events, but woven together into a readable whole by the author's imagination. The true story is, Rockman happened on a stash of correspondence among his family members sent during the critical years of 1938-42. Many letters were from Lina herself, who was growing more desperate, day by day. By turn, each family member urges the others to "do something" for poor Lina (Rockman's grandmother) -- but in fact, none of them were able to do much of anything. All were struggling with their own problems, in foreign cultures themselves, functioning in an unfamiliar language, lacking any easy access to the kind of people who did have the power to 'do something'. In many cases, the 'free' family members were in considerable danger themselves - witness cousin Max who was exiled from England to the refugee camp on the Isle of Man because he, as a former German citizen, could have been a Nazi spy.
'Heroes' in many ways, is a frustrating book. There are times you want to shake one character or the other and urge them to hurry -- but we operate from the position of hindsight, knowing what lies ahead. The characters in the book clearly do not.
In fact, one of the most valuable aspects of the book is to demonstrate how little any of them actually knew about what was happening in Poland. There were 'rumors' of mass deaths, stories, whispered reports. But who could believe such atrocities, from a civilized country like Germany?
As Israel endures our current Intifada, it is popular to say that the worst thing the Arabs are doing to us is to make us kill their children. In a similar vein, one of the worst aspects of the Holocaust is what the Nazis made us do to each other - to divide our families, to accuse and blame each other, to demand action from others, when we ourselves were unable (or unwilling) to help. In the sense of our constant need to remember, to insist absolutely 'never again', Rockman's book is a cornerstone.
Grasping the impossible to grasp , November 25, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from New York United States
There are no words to describe the evil of the Nazi regime and its treatment of the Jewish population in Europe. In this simple book, None of Them were Heroes, about ordinary people, one begins to grasp some of the horror which is impossible to grasp. One gets a glimmer of an idea of the slippery slope the Jewish population found itself on--one by one the ordinary aspects of life were denied to them--each of them of little significance but all together composing the social fabric each individual needs to survive.
This is a must read for anyone interested in life.

Book Description
Who could have predicted that even into the 21st century, Jews would continue to feel the lethal blade of anti-Semitism, with unrelenting attacks on synagogues, rabbis, individuals, Jewish institutions and Jewish-owned property? Michael Moshe Checinski is not surprised. He has lived through the virulent anti-Semitism that produced the Lodz ghetto and the Nazi death camps. After the War, as a member of Polish Counterintelligence, Michael confronted the anti-Semitism that "cleansed" him from his native land. As a Research Fellow, he encountered the gargoyle of anti-Semitism at Harvard, and as Professor of Defense Economics, he came face-to-face with unrelenting anti-Semitism in the bastion of modern Democracy, The American-German Marshall Center. At each period in his life, Checinski believes firmly that he has finally arrived in a social Eden, only to discover that even the good people turn away and shrink from the fight against anti-Semitism. So, he begins to co! llect data -- reports, memos -- snippets of information that will corroborate what he has found out, first hand: that the tentacles of anti-Semitism cannot be cut off by just wishing them away, or ignoring them. They must be aggressively confronted and their root cause, destroyed. Checinski is on a crusade, but he is no Don Quixote. He is a proud Jew, fighting bigotry, and more often than not, pays a high price for his ideals.

This is a family celebration book, with enough material for all eight days of Hanukkah. It offers factual material about the laws and customs of Hanukkah, as well as historical perspectives on how Hanukkah is celebrated by Jewish communities around the world. Of special interest are the first person accounts and narratives describing some of the obstacles that Jews have faced when trying to celebrate Hanukkah in different lands during the last century. This book is a product of the Hartman Institute, the leading institute of Jewish pluralism in the world. Rabbi David Hartman, its founder and director, is one of the leading forces within Judaism today.

Book Description
A how-to guide for a creative celebration of candle lighting, blessings, songs, stories, and readings for adults, teenagers and children. Features “The Maccabees’ Megillah” which retells the dramatic conflict of the Hanukkah story. Includes 8 biographical readings on great Jewish men and women.
Reviewer: Reuven Ben Dov from Jerusalem
Exciting, passionate, creative, original, inspiring and informative. This was my quickie review for those who must buy the book immediately. But let us cast a look at a book written under the auspices of the Hartman Institute in Jerusalem which therefore guarantees its pluralistic, intelligent and intellectual approach.
After the usual blessings, and traditional and modern Israeli songs, the meat of the book begins with the Maccabees' "Megillah" culled by the authors from the Books of the Maccabees and other historical and midrashic sources. Naturally divided into eight sections for nightly readings of the story of Hannukkah. The writing is alive and gripping as we learn of the turncoat High Priest Jason, King Antiochus, the royal maniac, Hannah and her seven sons, Judah the hammer, the woman warrior Judith and others.
We are then advised to read of the heroism of a diferent modern hero every night. Pride of place is given to Natan Sharansky's personal account of how he persuaded the camp commander to light a menorah. Other heroes include Rabbi Levi Yizchak of Berditchev, Golda Meir.Yitzchak Rabin, the father of Reform Rabbi Hugo Gryn who made a margarine menorah in a concentration camp, and the zedaka heroes of Danny Siegel
By the way, its almost worth buying this book to marvel at the graphic design, and the numerous photographs of which pride of place has to go to the nine different hand postures of Rabbi Lawrence Bush representing prayer, peace, menorah, keeping kosher etc.Striking photos include that of a menorah in an apartment building overlooking a town hall in Germany bedecked with the Nazi flag, and non Jewish citizens of Billings, Montana, holding menorot to protest the anti-semitic actions of the Klu Klux Klan
Obviously children and teenagers get pride of place with over 40 pages of great ideas for exciting their imagination with stories, games, songs and cartoons.
A description of the Laws and customs(and their historical origins), ethnic foods, Christmas/Hanukkah celebrations in America, and mystical meditations lead us to the final section of eight(what else!)contemporary jewish thinkers reflections on the relevance of this festival today. As well as David Hartman, Daniel Gordis, Harold Schulweis, Irving Greenberg, Judith Kates, Herman Wouk, Mordechai Kaplan and Theodore Herzl Gaster, I am delighted that the longest article is reserved for Mordecai Gafni.
He refers to Hanukkah in terms of his forthcoming book Soul Print-our personal essence, our hidden light which is the DNA of the soul. He poignantly explains loneliness through his failure to appreciate the importance of his eight years old son's box of treasures. "He looked at me, a tear rolling down his cheek, and said:Abba, I gave you my box. In it were all the things I love. These are my things and you didn't receive them." The whirl of the dreidel is described as a metaphor for our desire to live in dance. The art of living is to know how to transform the inevitable falls into the dance of life.
Let me conclude that, as I have reviwed well over 400 books for the Jerusalem Post, I have over the years developed some sense of which books stand out from the shelves as being original and highly reader-friendly. Having previously read and used at my seder The Family Participation Hagaddah co-authored by Noam Zion, I now know to buy automatically any book written by him. --This text refers to the Paperback edition

Reviewer: Nigel Savage from New York
What do you get if you cross a Passover seder with a Hannukah celebration?
The answer can now be revealed: A Different Light, Noam Zion's follow-up to A Different Night, his contemporary haggadah. (Coming up soon: A Different Fight [Haman vs Mordechai and Esther...] and A Different Flight [Jonathan Livingston Segal]:-) )
Once you see the book it's obvious. Take a holiday that's nominally widely observed, but much less widely understood, and add meaning, history, art - turn it, in other words, into a family _seder_.
This is a great book: great as a gift, (for oneself, as well as for others)and destined to become a Jewish perennial.
Happy Chanukah! --This text refers to the Paperback edition

1) Presents, for the first time, the positive affect of shtetl life on the modern world. 2) Focuses on the heroes of the shtetl; those that did not give up their Jewish life in order to become respected and well known in the world at large. 3) Shows how the common shtetl image depicting destitute, ignorant and close-minded people was, in large measure, far from the truth.

Heszel Klepfisz was born in 1910 into a rabbinical family that lived near Warsaw. He studied philosophy, history and literature at universities in Warsaw, Brussels and Zurich earning a Ph.D. in Philosophy. By the age of 19, he began writing articles in the Jewish newspapers attacking anti-Semitism in Poland. In 1933, he was one of the first to warn of the menace of fascism.

Book Description
Modern science, philosophy, thought and reason owe a great debt to the Jewish ghettos that comprises shtetl life in Europe. Contrary to popular belief, the shtetl was not a place where fiddlers on the roof watched the world pass them by.
Quite the contrary. The author presents clear historical data to show that many great minds which grew out of the shtetl refused to shed their Jewishness in order to achieve fame in the world at large.
In his cogent analysis, the author reveals the great personalities that blossomed in the caldron of shetetl life, greats like The Baal Shem Tov, Y.I. Peretz, Franz Rosenzweig, Januz Korczak, and many others.

Reviewer: Midwest Book Review from Oregon, WI USA
The Inexhaustible Wellspring: Reaping The Rewards Of Shtetl Life by Heszel Klepfisz (formerly Chief Rabbi of Panama and Professor of Judaic Studies and History at the University of Panama), knowledgeably examines the thousand-year-old "Shtetl" Jewish community in Poland, and how it maintained its own language, forms of social life, educational network, moral discipline and more. This community declared an economic boycott of Nazi Germany in the early 1930's and broke relations with that country even though it meant losing income. The Inexhaustible Wellspring insightfully examines the Jewish spirit, its ramifications, the deadly toll of the Holocaust, and more. Offering new ways to look upon what Shtetl life was and its contribution to Judaism as a whole, The Inexhaustible Wellspring is a work of impressive scholarship and a welcome contribution to personal and academic Judaic Studies reading lists.

According to one of the authors' anonymous sources, former CIA director Allen Dulles was "one of the worst traitors in American history" because of his involvement in the linkage among Nazi corporations, U.S. oil interests and Saudi Arabia in the 1930s. The allegations are synthesized from interviews with some 500 former intelligence officers of various nationalities. The major powers, the authors argue, have repeatedly taken covert action designed to bring about the destruction of Israel, as much out of greed for oil as anti-Semitism. Among the charges made in these pages: Allied leaders conspired to block the creation of the State of Israel in 1948 for fear its presence would threaten the flow of Arab oil to the West. Great Britain and the United States, while pretending to support Israel during the Six-Day War, passed Israeli military secrets to their Arab foes. The Reagan administration tried to set up Israel as the principal scapegoat for the Iran-Contra scandal. Over the past 50 years, virtually every Jew in the world has been the subject of electronic surveillance by the British with the assistance of American intelligence. Loftus and Aarons wrote The Unholy Trinity.

The authors (Unholy Trinity, St. Martin's, 1992) argue that the United States and other Western democracies have had a covert agenda to subvert Jewish nationalistic claims throughout the century. That the U.S. State Department has always been anti-Israel has been well documented before, but the authors further their claims by relying on formerly classified American documents and the recollections of many former operatives, or old spies, as they are called here. Book Description
A hugely controversial work that exposes a series of scandals from Oliver North to the British royal family, The Secret War Against the Jews reveals as much about political corruption inside Western intelligence as it does about Israel. Using thousands of previously top-secret documents and interviews with hundreds of current and former spies, Loftus and Aarons, both veteran investigators, Nazi-hunters, and authors, present a compelling narrative.
The authors demonstrate that numerous Western countries, especially the United States and Great Britain, have conducted repeated and willful spying missions on Palestine and later Israel over many decades. While on the surface these two countries and others profess to be ardent allies of Israel, they work, in fact, through their intelligence services to betray Israel's secrets to the Arabs. Their motive: oil and multinational profits, which must be attained at any price through international covert policies.
The pageant of characters appearing in this narrative is vast and shocking. This is not only a compelling work of history, but also a volume whose grave allegations will be debated for years to come.
It's the Oil, Stupid , April 14, 2003
Reviewer: John Landon (see more about me) from NYC, NY United States
This is a withering expose, almost unintended and beyond its basic purpose of documenting the 'secret war against the Jews', of the most unintelligent aspect of government a la Machiavel, the Intelligence factor lurking in the shadows. The problem, of course, is that the facts of unnamed 'sources' from the 'old spies' are not fully trustworthy and the whole book is no doubt plausibly deniable. The material requires cautious reading therefore because of the danger of still further disinformation. What a portrait starting with Jack Philby, Ibn Saud, and the Oil Companies, of sordid politicians and their obscure affairs, starring notably the infamous Allen Dulles! The book outstrips its theme in many ways, and while I am all ears to any case for the behind-the-scenes espionage against the Jews (the evidence is certainly convincing), the implications move beyond this question to how we are to take our politics at all, given this degree of dishonesty by all parties, up to and including Bush 41, the object it appears of Syrian blackmail. If one cannot take all the claims as established, one can certainly take the warning to beware of politicians once and for all as beyond redemption.
Profoundly shocking in its revelations. A must read. , November 13, 1997
Reviewer: jrobin from Detroit, MI
John Loftus and Mark Aarons don't just open a can-of-worms in this disturbing book but rather a Pandora's Box of accusations that if only partly true begs a massive reversion of our current understanding of the major political players of this century. "The Secret War Against The Jews" is divided up into three historical periods: The Age of Bigotry, 1920-1947, The Age of Greed, 1948-1973, and The Age of Stupidity, 1974- 1992. "Bigotry" examines the dawn of middle east oil development and key players Jack Philby, Ibn Saud, an the Dulles brothers. The second section, "Greed," expands the activities of these individuals in and out of the WWII. The third and last section, "Stupidity," deals with the Iran-Contra players namely V.P Bush, Bill Casey, and a host of evil characters. Perhaps a better title for this book should have been "The Secret War Against the Public," for as the authors point out we all are the Jews.

Although I have not read this book... , June 17, 2004

I can honestly say that for every argument a Zionist makes that claims the U.S. is secretly aiding the destruction of Israel, I can probably find a fundamentalist Muslim quote that claims just the opposite. So, what's the point? Let's look at the facts here:
- America was one of the first countries to recognize Israel as a state
- America still gives Israel a lot of money, in the sum of billions of dollars a year for foreign aid
- America assisted Israel with technological progress and defensive capabilities
Oh, and my dad, who was an officer in the Egyptian army at the time of the 1967 war, said that any claim the U.S. was aiding the Egyptians against Israel is ludicrous. In fact, the U.S. was displeased with Egypt because of Nasser's decision to get Soviet aid for the country.
So, why do you have to dig deep to find facts that U.S. officials dislike Israel, when you can easily find facts proving otherwise that are clear as night and day? That's not to say that Israel isn't helping the U.S. as well, they're always helping research advanced technology for both militaries so it's a mutually benficial relationship.
So although I have never read this book, I'm going to judge it by its cover. It's pure Zionist paranoia. Just for the record, I'm not racist, I'm not anti-semitic, I have a lot of Jewish friends. Although my Jewish friends are cool and would never start discussing this as a serious issue.
Peace,
KT
A Great Read , May 2, 2004
Reviewer: Dr J E Robinson from Toronto, Ontario Canada
(...)First of all I have a point of disagreement about the whole concept of secret war. There is no secret war nor has there ever been a secret war. The war is open, continuous and has gone on for thousands of years. It is called anti-Semitism! It is supported by government propaganda, some schools, and even some religions. I just read the book "Genghis Khan" by Weatherford and posted a review at Amazon.com and in that book that describes things happening around mainly 1211 to 1350 AD. In that book the author notes that the Jews (amazingly) were blamed by the locals when the Khan family reached the Danube River. So it was happening then and they are still blamed and vilified. Any place where you have ignorant people you have Jews being blamed. To me it is that simple.
Now for the main parts of the book itself. The premise of the book is interesting. There are many documents and similar that are classified so one really does not know all the historical fine details - of what has gone in the past. What really happened to the body of Hitler in Berlin (?) is one story that stands out in my mind. So the authors have taken this tact and have created a book - a heavy 514 page plus another 115 pages of notes - to dissect and look at past historical incidents relating to Jews, but mainly since 1920. They have used a lot of interviews with people in the intelligence services to get the inside story as Loftus does nightly on WABC. It is a story of greed, incompetence, and hatred of Jews or indifference. They outline many instances where the intelligence services have helped or hindered Israel and the Zionist movement. It is a fine work and a fine read. It is the type of book that will kill most of a weekend with great enjoyment. It contains many fascinating side stories and comments; it is 80-90% right (my guess) and it is entertaining.

About the Author
Larry Domnitch has degrees in both political science and Jewish history. He writes extensively for newspapers and journals throughout the United States and Israel, especially about this unique period of history.
Book Description
The Cantonist era was a terrifying episode in Jewish history, and one that is etched in the collective memory of the Jewish people. Tsar Nicholas of Russia conscripted thousands of Jewish children – some as young as 6 years old – into his army for up to 25 years! The Tsar's declared goal was nothing less than to convert these children to Christianity; for him, their baptism was of the highest priority. This book reveals the struggle of these youngsters to maintain their Judaism against impossible odds. Many failed. But some, like Golda Meir's grandfather, succeeded in reclaiming their heritage and reconnecting the chain of Jewish tradition. Today, thousands of Jews are descendants of those stalwart Cantonists.
